How Long Should a Best Man Speech Be?
The short answer, a word count table you can check your draft against, and practical ways to cut and time your speech.
A best man speech should be three to five minutes long. At a relaxed speaking pace of about 125 words per minute, that works out to roughly 375 to 625 words.
That's the honest answer to how long a best man speech should be, and it holds up whether you're funny, sentimental, or somewhere in between. Under three minutes is fine if it's good. Over five and you're competing with dinner, the open bar, and a DJ who keeps looking at his watch. Below is a word count table, what to cut when you're over, how to time yourself properly, and how your best man speech length compares to the other speeches of the night.
Best man speech length: words vs. minutes
Most people speak faster in conversation than they should at a wedding. With a microphone, an echoey room, and a crowd that needs a beat to laugh, about 125 words per minute is the pace to plan for. Use this table to check your draft.
| Speaking time | Words (at 125 per minute) | How it lands |
|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | about 125 | A quick toast. Works at a rehearsal dinner. |
| 2 minutes | about 250 | Short and sweet. One story, one toast. |
| 3 minutes | about 375 | The low end of ideal. Room for a joke and a real moment. |
| 4 minutes | about 500 | The sweet spot for most best man speeches. |
| 5 minutes | about 625 | The upper limit. Every line has to earn its spot. |
| 7 minutes | about 875 | Too long. Guests start fidgeting. |
| 10 minutes | about 1,250 | Way too long, no matter how good. |
So how many words is a 5 minute speech? About 625 if you take your time, which you should. Your draft will also run longer out loud than you expect, because laughs and pauses add 15 to 30 seconds to almost any speech.
Why three to five minutes works
It isn't an arbitrary number. Three minutes is about how long it takes to introduce yourself, tell one story properly, turn to the couple, and give a toast. Five minutes is about how long a room full of people holding forks will give you full attention. Past that, attention drops off, and the best part of your speech, the sincere ending, gets heard by the fewest people.
There's also the schedule. Most receptions have two to four speeches stacked together. If each one runs long, the first dance slides, the kitchen gets nervous, and the couple loses time with their guests.
What to cut when you're over
- Extra stories. If you have three, keep the best one and tell it well. This one cut usually saves two minutes.
- The throat-clearing. "I wasn't sure what to say" and "I've been dreading this" add nothing. Start with your hook.
- Long thank-you lists. The couple or the hosts usually cover these. A single line is plenty.
- Backstory for inside jokes. If a joke needs a paragraph of setup, cut the joke.
- Repeated praise. Saying he's loyal three different ways is one way too many. One example beats three adjectives.
- A second ending. Plenty of drafts toast, then keep talking, then toast again. Pick one.

How to time yourself
- Read it out loud, standing up. Silent reading is roughly twice as fast as speaking. Standing changes your breathing and your pace.
- Use the voice you'll use at the reception. Louder and slower than talking at a table.
- Pause where the laughs go. Count to two at each joke. That's what the room will need.
- Time it on your phone three times. Take the average. Nerves will speed you up on the day, so if you land at four and a half minutes in practice, you're in good shape.
- Do a word count as a gut check. Paste the draft into any word processor. Over 650 words means it's almost certainly over five minutes.
How it compares to the other wedding speeches
- Maid of honor speech: about the same, three to five minutes. Coordinate with the maid of honor so you're close in length. Her side of things is covered in our maid of honor speech guide.
- Father or mother of the bride: often a little longer, four to six minutes, since parents usually welcome guests and thank people.
- Parents of the groom: usually two to four minutes, especially if they gave a toast at the rehearsal dinner.
- The couple's own speech: can run five minutes or so because of thank-yous.
- A guest or rehearsal dinner toast: one to two minutes. See our wedding toast ideas.
The best man often speaks last, so you're the one standing between the crowd and the dance floor. That's a good reason to stay on the shorter side of the range.
A best man speech at the ideal length
Why it works: at about 400 words, it runs a little over three minutes, closer to three and a half with laughs, and it still has room for a hook, a story, the partner, and a toast.
Good evening, everyone. I'm Riley. Aaron and I have been best friends for twenty-two years, ever since he rode his bike into my family's mailbox and then knocked on our door to confess. He was seven. He'd brought a roll of duct tape. He offered to fix it himself.
My dad still talks about that kid. He said, "That boy is going to turn out all right." And for twenty-two years, I've watched that kid do the same thing over and over. When something breaks, Aaron knocks on the door. He doesn't hide from it.
He did it when we wrecked his mom's lawnmower in eighth grade. He did it when he accidentally sent his boss a text meant for me. And he did it in college when I was having a really rough semester and stopped answering my phone. He drove three hours, knocked on my apartment door, and when I didn't answer, he sat on the steps outside and did his homework until I did. He didn't give me a speech. He just said, "I'm not leaving," and then asked if I had anything to eat. I had half a box of crackers. We split it. That weekend is the reason I finished school, and I'm not sure I've ever told him that until right now.
Six years ago, Aaron met Jenna at a friend's Fourth of July party. The fireworks got rained out, and everybody ran inside, except those two, who stood under the porch roof and talked until the rain stopped. Which was about midnight.
He called me the next morning and said, "I think I met the one." I said, "Aaron, you've known her for one rainstorm." He said, "Yeah. It was a long rainstorm."
Jenna, I've watched you two for six years now, and here's what I've noticed. You're the only person who knocks on his door. When he's stressed, when he's tired, when he's pretending he's fine, you show up and you don't leave. You're everything he's been for the rest of us, and I'm so grateful he finally has that for himself.
Aaron, my dad was right. You turned out all right. Better than all right.
So please raise your glasses. To Aaron and Jenna. May you always be the first knock on each other's door.

Common questions
How many words is a 5 minute speech?+
About 625 words at a relaxed pace of 125 words per minute. If you talk quickly, five minutes can stretch to 700 words or more, but slower is better with a crowd and a microphone.
Is a 10 minute best man speech too long?+
Yes. Ten minutes is roughly twice what most guests are comfortable with, and the room will start checking phones around minute six. Cut it to one story and aim for three to five minutes.
How long is a 500 word speech?+
About four minutes at 125 words per minute, a little less if you speak quickly. That's right in the ideal range for a best man speech.
Should the best man speech be longer than the maid of honor speech?+
No, they should be about the same. Three to five minutes each keeps things balanced, and it's worth checking with the maid of honor so one of you isn't twice as long as the other.
How do I know how long my speech is without giving it?+
Read it out loud at the pace you'd use at the reception and time it on your phone. Add 15 to 30 seconds for laughs and pauses.
